After retirement, you are not sure what to do with yourself Volunteering at Miners Court has given me a purpose and I've made lifelong friends. I really enjoy visiting the customers and making a difference.
Lucy is our longest serving volunteer, having donated her time to Miners Court for over eleven years!
After retiring from her job in retail, Lucy was looking for something to fill her time and saw an advert in the local newspaper looking for volunteers for the Miners Court kitchen and diner.
Over the years Lucy has assisted with befriending customers, delivering activities, helping with events, mentored new volunteers and has been a helping hand for colleagues when needed.
She is always warm, friendly and inviting to all those who attend the Day Centre and her caring nature is clear in all that she does. She is highly thought of by colleagues, volunteers and customers.
The pandemic lockdowns meant that the Day Centre had to close Lucy went above and beyond in ensuring that Miners Court customers remained supported. Lucy adapted her role to become a Befriending Volunteer, providing weekly social phone calls to Day Centre attendees who do not reside at Miners Court.
When restrictions eased, Lucy, along with other volunteers, started providing befriending visits to customers who reside at Miners Court. The visits and calls have been a great success they have had such a positive impact on the customers of Miners Court, through helping to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
